Manila Court dismisses 2019 murder case against Ex-Rep. Arnie Teves

A Manila court has cleared former Negros Oriental 3rd District Rep. Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr of a 2019 murder charge, which raised new questions about justice in cases involving powerful political figures.

The case was about the killing of Miguel Lopez Dungog, a former provincial board member who was shot dead near a hospital in Dumaguete City in 2019.

The court said prosecutors failed to clearly prove that Teves was involved in the killing, leading to the dismissal of the case against him and two other accused.

Teves and his lawyers welcomed the ruling, saying it showed that the accusations against him were “weak and unfair.”

However, many people expressed concern that the decision could weaken public trust, especially in areas where political violence has long been a problem.

Despite the acquittal, Teves will remain in custody because he is still facing several other serious criminal cases.

One of these cases involves the 2023 killing of former Negros Oriental governor Roel Degamo and several others in Pamplona,on which the victims’ families continue to pursue in court.

The ruling highlights the need for stronger investigations and solid evidence to ensure that justice is both fair and credible in high-profile murder cases.
