The National Unity Party (NUP) announced on January 13, 2026, that it will file a new legal complaint against Cavite 4th District Rep. Francisco "Kiko" Barzaga over alleged bribery claims he made during the bicameral conference committee discussions on the 2026 national budget.
NUP Secretary-General Lito Atienza said the party is preparing a complaint for bribery and violation of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act (RA 3019) following Barzaga’s televised statements suggesting that lawmakers were offered bribes for approving budget insertions.
“Bribery is a serious criminal offense, and if Rep. Barzaga has evidence, he should present it to the proper authorities, but if he has none, he should face the consequences of making such accusations,” Atienza said.
The issue started in December 2025 during heated debates on the 2026 budget when Barzaga accused some lawmakers of demanding bribes.
Barzaga has not released an official statement on the matter, although sources close to him said his remarks were made during a tense debate and were meant to expose alleged corruption.
The controversy has increased tension within the House majority coalition, which is already facing issues related to budget disagreements and corruption investigations.
NUP officials said the complaint is expected to be filed with the DOJ in the coming days, which may lead to a formal investigation.
